On the top floor of The Horizon, you'll find the Skylounge to relax and unwind, and the Library to work or read quietly. A Sonos sound system is available to cheer things up with some music - and the Spotify account is on us.
If you'd like to find out how to control the music or solve common problems, this is the right article for you.
Controlling the music
You can only control the music using the iPad that is attached to the wall, next to the vending and coffee machine.
To conserve energy, the iPad will automatically turn off after a few minutes (the music will keep playing). To power on the iPad, press the round home button.
At the bottom of the screen, you'll then find these main functions:
- My Sonos, to quickly return to recently played tracks or favorites
- Browse, to pick a music source (radio station or Spotify) and to pick your favorite tunes
- Rooms, to switch between controlling the Skylounge or the Library
- Search, to lookup your favorite artist, track or genre in the Spotify catalogue
- Settings, which is disabled to avoid configuration errors
House rules
We are giving all residents the power to put on their favorite music. Please take these rules into account to ensure a pleasant atmosphere for everybody:
- Keep the volume down and do not play any music before 8:00 or after 22:00 o'clock.
- Do not try to control any hardware buttons or detach the iPad or any speakers: you can manage everything you need using the app.
- When you're the only resident in the space, play whatever music you like. However, when other tenants use the space, take into account their preferences too.
- Keep in mind that the Library is a space intended to work, read, relax in a quiet environment. Only play appropriate music when all residents present agree.
Please note that we are offering this perk in The Horizon only, as a pilot project. If we notice residents are not respecting each other or the equipment, we might retire the service at any time.
Tips and tricks
You might find these remarks and tips useful when using the sound system:
- If you don't know exactly what to play, go to Browse, then Spotify, and pick one of the Daily Mix playlists that are provided. Spotify will generate them based on the musical taste of all users.
- Before you pick a song or radio station, make sure you're going to play them in the right room. You can see which room is selected in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you see Library instead of Skylounge or vice versa, first go to Rooms in the main menu at the bottom, select the other space, then head back to the previous screen to start playing the song.
- If you are using the sound system with multiple residents present at the same time, try not to interrupt songs that are still playing. By touching the three dots icon at the right of a search result, you can pick Play next or Add to queue.
- The "back" button on top of the screen cannot be used as a side effect of the security configuration. To go back to the previous screen, you can usually drag your finger from the left edge of the screen to the middle of the screen; or drag upwards on the screen. The arrows on this screenshot indicate the gestures you can try. You can also just tap one of the main menu items at the bottom of the screen to go back.
Solving common issues
The music is too loud
We capped the volume of the speakers, but we didn't want to be too strict. If you are bothered by the volume, please discuss it with the other residents present in the space. Lowering the volume can easily be done on the iPad. Press the song that's playing (right above the main menu) and drag the volume slider to the left.
If there are regular issues with the sound level set by other residents, we can lower the general maximum volume setting. Please get in touch with our Solution Centre if you feel this would be required.
My favorite track or radio station won't play
Unfortunately, we don't have control over the availability of the radio stations or the Spotify service. Try again later if you encounter issues. If the problem persists, please contact our Solution Centre.
Different tracks are playing in the same space
If you hear different music at the same time, another resident probably grouped together the wrong speakers. Follow these instructions to restore the groups:
- Go to the Rooms menu item in the bottom main menu bar
- You'll now see how the speakers are grouped together.
- Tick the Library A speaker, then touch the Group button. Deselect all speakers, then select only the Library C (L+R) speaker.
- Now tick the Skylounge C R speaker, then touch the Group button. Deselect all speakers, then select all other speakers with Skylounge in the name.
- You'll now see that the speakers are in two groups again, with the right speakers in them. You can now select your favorite music.
I can't control the music using my own device
That's right. To avoid residents being able to control the music from outside the common spaces and to ensure optimal quality of service for the music streaming, we decided to put the speakers on a private network that is only available to the
speakers and the kiosk iPad in the skylounge.
The iPad isn't working
Please check the following things if you can't get the iPad to work:
- To conserve energy, the iPad goes into standby mode after a few minutes. You have to click the circle home button to power the iPad up again.
- If that's not working, please check whether the electrical plug is still connected behind the coffee machine.
- If the iPad has been connected to power for at least 5 minutes, and clicking the home button still doesn't not bring the iPad to life, please contact our Solution Centre.
The iPad is asking for an unlock code
This shouldn't happen. You can control the required functions in the Sonos application without the unlock code. Just close the screen asking for it. The security code is present on the device to avoid changes in the configuration or residents using the iPad for other purposes than controlling the music.
